Healthy Digestion....

There is a lot that happens when we eat our food. We have food breakdown, nutrient absorption and waste removal!

We start with enzymes that are secreted by the salivary glands. These glands are so important to initiate the process. When you start chewing your food - notice the word chewing - it stimulates the salivary glands to start producing enzymes to breakdown carbohydrates and fats. This process actually helps to make the job of the stomach a little bit easier. Don't get me wrong there is still ALOT that needs to happen when the food gets here but this is the beginning!

Next phase as the food hits the stomach is all about PH. The goal is to have a highly acidic stomach (low PH) so that the food can be broken down into a liquid substance. Other organ areas such as the liver, pancreas and gall bladder kick in to help the stomach out in this intense process.

Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) is the main way that food gets digested but because our body is so amazing this is also when other cool things happen! HCL naturally can protect your body from bacteria and parasites that get in via your food. Yes, you are constantly ingesting this stuff on a regular basis. Also, calcium, iron and vitamin B12 rely on HCL for absorption!! Betcha didn't know that?!

So, now I know your thinking how in the heck do I know if I have enough HCL! Well common symptoms if it is too low are bloating, burping, & heartburn (to name a few) that all occur shortly after eating. This is where most would say "Grab some tums - you will be fine!" But that is exactly OPPOSITE of what you want to do.

Healing the gut should be the answer and an awesome way to start is doing a Paleo diet! Taking out inflammatory foods that breakdown a healthy gut is the first step. Whole food supplements (no not from Whole Foods - although they may have a brand that is whole food), glandular supplement support, high quality omega 3 oils, fermented foods, good quality fats, bone broth, adequate sleep and managing stress are all other healthy approaches to getting your body back on track! Getting your body to function better may take a little bit of work on your part with the right tools you can do it!
